What is Fry Sauce?

What is Fry Sauce?

If you are from Utah, you know what Fry Sauce is.  If you don’t know what Fry Sauce is, I am about to rock your world.

It is quite simple really.

*For an additional kick, add a bit of Dill Pickle Relish or Hot Sauce.  (Not the original, I know, but still delicious)

It may sound a bit weird, but tryst me.  It is a must have condiment for any potato product.

Do you have any variations on this classic?  Let me know in the comments below.

Utah’s 5 Best Fast Food Joints

Utah’s 5 Best Fast Food Joints

Utah has a lot of things to offer.  The Best Snow on Earth, Scenic Mountain Peaks, and Fry Sauce.  If you do not know what Fry Sauce is, you are definitely missing out.  (Here is how you make it) Many people ask me what are some great places to eat that are unique to Utah that will not break the bank.  Well…I am finally going to answer that question.  Here are Utah’s 5 Best Fast Food Joints, in no particular order.

Crown Burger

377 East 200 South
Salt Lake City, Utah 84111
(801) 532-1155

Crown Burger: A Utah Staple

Crown Burger: A Utah Staple

We start our list off with in my opinion, the best burger in the state.  No list of Utah restaurants would be complete without Crown Burger.  Their signature item, The Crown Burger is a delicious Thick Cut Pastrami Cheeseburger with lettuce, onion, and fry sauce.  Accompany that with fries and a Chocolate Shake and you have a gut buster fit for a king.  If burgers aren’t your thing, they have delicious sandwiches, corn dogs, gyros, and salads.  With 7 locations across the Wasatch Front, you are sure to find something you love.

Moochies Meatballs

232 East 800 South
Salt Lake City, UT 84111
801-596-1350

Moochies

If you are in the mood for a great Philly sandwich, look no further than Moochies.  Having been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, their Philly is not complete without a healthy dose of jalapeno sauce.  While I do not waste my time on anything BUT the Philly when I come in, I also hear that the Meatball Sub is out of this world.  Lines for these famous sandwiches are usually out the door.  Portions are huge, so be prepared to take some home with you.  After several years in their downtown location, Moochies recently ventured and opened a second location in Midvale and a third in Lehi.  If you are in the mood for a uniquely Utah sandwich, this must be your first stop.

Olympus Burger

9326 S 700 E

Sandy, UT 84070

801-571-6868

Olympus Burger

Olympus Burger has been around for quite a while offering a unique combination of American staples and Greek items.  Family owned and operated, they take great pride in serving some of the best food in the state. The one reason why I included them on this list however was for their Gyro sandwich.  One of the things I remember growing up was when I was in High School, coming to get their Gyro Combo with amazing fries and 4 containers of Fry Sauce (seriously if you don’t know what Fry Sauce is, here is a recipe, go and try it for yourself.  It will change your world)  Homemade tzatziki sauce, piles of gyro meat and warm pita bread are a welcome change to the classic burgers and worth stopping by for.  With two locations in the Salt Lake Valley, you should have no problem getting in and trying for yourself.

R&R BBQ

307 W 600 S

Salt Lake City, UT

801-364-0443

R&R BBQ

R&R BBQ the best barbecue joint in the state, if not the country.  (You are welcome to try and change my mind) R&R offers true BBQ to Utah with their smoked meats and unique menu.  Everything on their menu is smoked, tender, and generous with their portion sizes.  If you were going to have one thing however, have the Brisket Tacos.  If you want the full experience, get the 3 meat plate with Brisket, Sausage, and Shredded Chicken.  Their sauces round add a kick of flavor that rivals any I have had in my travels through the country.  For Dessert, have the delicious homemade Bread Pudding.

R&R has taken the state by storm with 7 locations across Salt Lake, Davis, and Utah counties including in Vivint Smart Home Arena, home of the Utah Jazz.  Anytime you are in a 3 mile radius of the place, you can smell the delicious smoked meats calling you in.  If you are in the mood for a BBQ experience like no other, check out R&R BBQ.

Burger Bar

Located just outside of Hill Air Force Base in Roy Utah, Burger Bar is another Utah staple offering up a unique spin on American classics.  Check out my review for a more in depth look at this amazing Utah treat.  These huge burgers offer a welcome change from anything else you have tasted before.

La Brea Bakery- Downtown Disney | Anaheim, CA

During our trip to Disneyland, I found an amazing restaurant that me being from Utah, I had never heard of. That is the La Brea Bakery.

Founded in 1989, they have an amazing mix of classic cuisine. You can find beautifully crafted Pizza, Sandwiches, Pasta and much more at an affordable price.

After our amazing day at Disneyland, we decided to head out to Downtown Disney. There, we decided on the La Brea Bakery.  After a short wait, we were escorted to our table.  I was impressed at how efficient the staff was at everything they did.  Being this was a busy weekend, we were seated without reservations within 20 minutes.

We were given some delicious bread as we skimmed over the menu.  I decided to try something non conventional in the Chicken Pot Pie, while my beautiful bride settled on the Chicken Alfredo.  Both menu items were AMAZING.  The Pot Pie came out in a ramekin with pastry on top.  As you break through the delicious and soft pastry top, you find a hearty mix of vegetables and chicken in a creamy chicken broth.  In addition to the Pot Pie, you are treated to a delicious and eclectic mix of greens with a vinaigrette dressing.

The Chicken Pot Pie was DELICIOUS

My Wife’s Alfredo was equally delicious, being heavy on the garlic and parm. (just how we like it).  The portions were good.

The Chicken Alfredo was ALSO amazing

We did not leave hungry.  We also ordered the dessert where she had the Gelato and I had the Chocolate Fudge Cake.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a big Chocolate lover.  This was actually given to us by mistake (The wait staff told us to keep it after their mistake) and has re-kindled a love of chocolate for me.  It was heaven on a plate.  The complex balance between sweet, savory, and fruity with the different fruits on the plate has broadened my horizons with what can be done with chocolate.

As we sat discussing our impromptu trip to the Happiest Place on Earth, we were delighted to see the nightly fireworks go off on the resort with our primo seats on the outside seating area.

A perfect end, to a perfect day.

Thank you La Brea Bakery.  We will be back!

Samyang 2x Spicy Chicken Noodles

Samyang 2x Spicy Chicken Noodles

I have seen a ton of YouTube videos about the Samyang 2x Spicy Chicken Noodles.  It vanquishes all those who stand in its way.  I haven’t seen any video that says that it’s not spicy.  If you want to check them out, just search for “Samyang 2x Spicy Chicken Noodles”

I decided I had to try it.  First step was trying to find it on Amazon. CLICK HERE TO ORDER!  After the two day PRIME wait, it finally came.  The bright red packaging was everything a spice head would dream of: Flames, Bombs, Chile Peppers, and Asian writing that I had no idea what it meant.

Prepping the Noodles

Making the noodles is easy.  When you open the package, you are greeted with the noodle loaf and 2 flavor packets.  One for the nuke sauce and another for a garnish of seaweed and sesame seeds.  If you don’t know how to make a traditional ramen, I have just one thing to say to you.  WHAT KIND OF MONGOLOID ARE YOU?

Step 1:  Put water to the boil on the stove.

Step 2: Wait for it to boil and put in the noodle loaf

Step 3: Drain the water, add the nuke sauce and toppings.

Step 4: Enjoy!

Finally: The Taste

Taste

To be honest, the taste of the noodles surpasses anything that has come out of any ramen packet I have ever tasted.  The noodles are thicker and have a unique, savory taste.  The color of the noodles turns a deep blood red with the addition of the nuke packet.  On a scale of 1-10 on flavor, I would give this a solid 10 for a ramen packet, but a 6 overall.  The spice kicks you right in the teeth immediately.  It is not the spiciest thing I have ever had, but for a commercial sold product, it certainly packs a punch.  The spice lasts a good 10 minutes but you can still feel the tingle after about an hour.  If you happen to get the sauce on any of your clothes or on your hands, it will stain.

WORD OF WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE, EYES, OR GO TO THE BATHROOM after eating or coming into contact with the liquid fire.  You WILL regret it.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  This advice may be from personal experience…

Burger Bar | Roy, UT

Burger Bar | Roy, UT

Driving through the small, unassuming town of Roy, Utah on the outskirts of Ogden and Hill Air Force Base, one could miss a classic Utah staple known simply as “Burger Bar”

Burger Bar in Roy Utah

They serve a classic Hamburger, made many different ways and also include some of the more exotic.  Elk, Buffalo, and an exotic meat of the month.  Some of the exotic meats have included Camel, Rabbit, Shark, and Yak.  In addition to Hamburgers, they serve Corn Dogs, Fish Sandwiches, Chicken Sandwiches, Veggie Burgers, Onion Rings, Fries, and Deep Fried Mushrooms to name a few.

There is no drive through or sit down area, instead you have to park your car and come up to the window to order.  There are two main menu signs to choose from and there is always a line to order.  Everything is made fresh.

In the Summertime, the parking lot is a hopping tailgate party with people bringing their lawn chairs and making it a picnic.

Best Burger in the State

My personal favorite is their classic Quad Cheese Ben, which is a standard Cheeseburger with 4 patties.  You can also add Bacon if you would like for an extra charge.  Pair that nicely with some Onion Rings and a Lime Rickey (Sprite with Grape syrup and limes) and you have yourself the best Hamburger experience in the State of Utah.

My wife always is a fan of the classic Corn Dog and Fries with a shake.  (Yes, they have amazing above the rim shakes as well.)

If you are ever in the need of the best Burger experience in the state, head on up to Roy and stop at the Burger Bar on Main Street.
